Pour la flèche de Notre-Dame restaurée à l'identique. We want Notre-Dame's spire rebuilt exactly as before.

On apprend aujourd'hui dans les médias que le gouvernement français, au lieu de reconstruire la flèche de Notre-Dame de Paris à l'identique en faisant appel à tous les artisans et savoir-faire traditionnels existant encore en France, vient de lancer un "concours international d'architectes" pour reconstruire une nouvelle flèche "adaptée aux techniques et enjeux de notre époque" (sic !).

Nous demandons solennellement au président de la République que l'on reconstruise la flèche de Viollet-le-Duc dans son apparence exacte telle que nous l'avons tous connue avant le terrible incendie de lundi dernier.

Le mépris dans lequel une partie des élites françaises semblent tenir Viollet-le-Duc ne saurait justifier la reconstruction d'une autre flèche que celle de ce grand artiste qui a orné le ciel de Paris pendant plus de 150 ans et que nous avons encore tous en tête.

Nous nous élevons contre le fait de confier à un(e) starchitecte la construction d'une nouvelle flèche. Notre-Dame ne doit pas constituer un trophée de chasse pour starchitecte en mal de notoriété !

Reconstruire autrement qu'à l'identique (au moins dans son aspect visuel extérieur) la flèche de Notre-Dame de Paris serait une insulte non seulement à la mémoire de ce grand artiste qu'a été Viollet-le-Duc, mais aussi aux Parisiens, aux Français et à nombre d'étrangers qui sont traumatisés par l'incendie de Notre-Dame et veulent retrouver la cathédrale, leur cathédrale, telle qu'ils l'ont connue durant toute leur vie.

Monsieur le président, Mesdames et Messieurs les membres du gouvernement, n'ajoutez pas à la peine que connaissent déjà des milliers de gens un affront à l'histoire et au bon sens. Paris ne manque pas d'autres endroits pour laisser s'épanouir l'architecture moderne.

Today we have learned from the French media that the French government, instead of rebuilding the spire of Notre-Dame de Paris exactly as it existed before the terrible fire of last Monday by calling on all the traditional craftsmen and savoir-faire that still exist in France and beyond, is intent on launching an "international architecture competition" in order to rebuild a spire "adapted to the technologies and the stakes of our times" [sic].

We solemnly appeal to the President of the French Republic to have Viollet-le-Duc's spire rebuilt in its exact external appearance as we knew it before last Monday's terrible fire.

The unfortunate contempt felt by a large swathe of the French elites towards Viollet-le-Duc's work should not justify the rebuilding of a spire other than that of this great artist which embellished the skyline of Paris for more than 150 years and which we all still keep in our minds.

We protest against the idea of entrusting a starchitect with the rebuilding of a new, different spire. Notre-Dame de Paris must not be added to the list of trophies of some starchitects vying for publicity and self-promotion!

To rebuild the spire of Notre-Dame other than exactly as it was before the fire (at least in its external visual appearance) would be an insult not only to the memory of a great artist like Viollet-le-Duc, but also to the Parisians, the French people and the numerous foreigners traumatized by the catastrophe that has befallen Notre-Dame and who wish to recover the cathedral, their cathedral, as they've known it during their entire lives.

Mister President, honorable members of the French government, please do not add to the sorrow experienced by thousands of people an affront to history and common sense. Paris has plenty of other locations where modern architecture can flourish.
