Genting HK begins construction of new global class ship
Casino cruise ship operator and Asian land casino investor Genting Hong Kong Inc Genting said it has begun building a second global class vessel for its Dream Cruise segment. The new vessel, likely to be delivered by 2022, is "for the fast-growing Asian market," the Hong Kong-listed company said in a written release this week.
Genting Hong Kong is a subsidiary of Genting Bhd, a Malaysian casino.
"We are pleased that comprehensive investments at three shipyards are bearing fruit and we are pleased to be able to celebrate our shipping company Dream Cruise's first steel cutting for another technologically advanced vessel today," the press release quoted group chairman Im Kok-tai (pictured left) as saying
He added: "Thanks to the use of artificial intelligence, Dream Cruise's second global class vessel will provide guests with a very exciting, modern and very comfortable travel experience."
Genting Hong Kong has been accelerating plans to expand its cruise business and has developed a portfolio of cruise lines of three brands serving different parts of the market. The brand said Crystal Cruise stands for the ultra-luxury segment, Dream Cruise stands for the premium segment and Star Cruise stands for the "modern" segment.
The company is already building its first global class vessel, which is scheduled for delivery in 2021. The vessel, commissioned by Genting Hong Kong, is being built at the MV Verften shipyard in Germany, a work Genting Hong Kong has acquired in recent years.
The second Global Class vessel is 342 meters long and 46 meters wide. Genting Hong Kong is preparing to lay the keel of a 208,000-ton cruise ship on Dec. 9, 2019.
With 2,500 passenger cabins accommodating more than 9,000 passengers and 2,200 crew members, the global class vessel is "the first globally capable of carrying more than 10,000 people," according to Genting Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong-listed company in August said it had agreed to sell up to 35% of its Dream Cruise business to a subsidiary of TPG Darting. Genting Hong Kong said the move would "strengthen the group's balance sheet and its ability to continue expanding its fleet in the cruise industry."
At the end of July, he was appointed president of the Dream Cruise division and head of international sales for Genting Cruise Lines.
The casino cruise company said on Aug. 30 it had reduced its first-half loss by 60.6% to $55.2 million.
